The new roll-up display is coming!

The age of flexible displays is drawing nearer after Sony recently debuted its latest in 4.1 inch screen that’s only 80 microns thick and can roll up into a cylinder just 4 mm in diameter – while still showing moving images at 432×240 resolution!   Samsung also has a folding OLED screen that is getting closer to market, and HP has a thin flexible display that is getting ready for mass production.  However, Sony’s technology seems to be by far the most superior as its screen has been rolled and unrolled more than a 1000 times while still working and displaying images the entire time. The new display was possible thanks to the development of integration technologies of Organic Thin-Film Transistors (OTFTs) and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) on an ultra-thin 20-micrometer thick flexible substrate. A flexible on-panel gate-driver circuit with OTFTs and soft organic insulators allowed Sony to get rid of the conventional rigid driver integrated circuit (IC) chips that would impede the rolling up of a display.

Could we soon have mobile phones with roll-out displays?
